Parliaments and People – a youth meeting in Tata

On the occasion of the 500th anniversary of the "parliament" (or "diet") that was organised in Tata in 1510 with the participation of envoys from several European countries on Hungary's possible joining the "League of Cambrai", and also of the 20th anniversary of the first free parliamentary elections in Hungary and in the ex-communist countries of Central-Eastern Europe the Municipality of Tata organised a youth meeting which took place between 17th and 21st June 2010.Young people aged 15 to 20 and some accompanying adults were invited from Tata's all twin and partner towns to participate in activities which were expected to induce discussions and reflection on the common historical and cultural heritage of the participating nations and also on what modern parliamentarism and parliamentary democracy means for the peoples of Europe, especially in the central-eastern region. The invited and local participants prepared posters representing their countries in 1510, read a 10-minute lecture on the same theme, and gave a 5-minute presentation on the functioning of their national parliaments in 2010. They also participated in a role play and in several activities on democratic decision making, democracy and citizenship, based on the Compass and Compasito manuals by the Council of Europe. The guests also visited Hungary's Parliament in Budapest and the House of Terror Museum. The youth meeting was co-financed by the Europe for Citizens Programme 2007-2013 of the European Union.
