The Municipality of Tata organised a two-day conference on preventing drug abuse and other harmful addictions among children and adolescents with the participation of 6 other European towns (out of which 5 are Tata’s twin-towns and 1 is a twin-town of a twin-town) on 16th and 17th October 2009. (3 invited twin-towns were unable to be present for different reasons.) The total number of the participants was 145 persons.
The general objectives of the conference were as follows:
1.    Learning about the EU policy and national policies against drugs.
2.    Learning about local anti-drug strategies throughout Europe.
3.    Sharing the best practices by Tata and its twinned towns in the field of preventing drug abuse and other harmful addictions with special attention to
-    dissemination of information among children and adolescents,
-    creative activities as means of drug prevention,
-    the importance of local partnerships.
4.    Endeavouring a regular discussion / exchange of experiences among the participating towns on preventing drug abuse and other harmful addictions at local level through a multi-lingual dynamic website dedicated to this theme.
5.    Promoting the fight against drug abuse and other harmful addictions among children and adolescents in Tata and the participating towns.
Apart from the presentations of the twin-towns the following officials also read lectures at the conference:
-    Vice-director of the National Institute for Drug Prevention, Budapest
-    Secretary of the Coordination Forum on Drug Affairs of Tata
The venue of the first conference day was the conference room of the Municipal Courthouse in Tata,  while the programmes of the second day were held at the Magyary Zoltán Culture Centre. The programme of the conference was advertised in the local and regional newspapers, on the official website of Tata and by the local television. Besides the “official” local participants the conference was open to the public with free entrance. Invitations were also sent to the settlements of the so-called “Tata Small Region”.
At the end of the first conference day the leaders of the participating delegations signed an agreement on providing information (texts and photos) about their local activities in the field of preventing drug abuse and other harmful addictions among children and adolescents for a multilingual dynamic website dedicated to this theme. The website is being edited with a joint work and this way the it is becoming a permanent forum of discussion and sharing of experiences
The programme of the second conference day turned out to be more packed than it had been previewed: two Hungarian civil organisations, two Hungarian educators on drug abuse and three twin-town organisations contributed to the conference by presentations and discussion.
Preceding the conference an awareness raising poster and tv spot competition was organised for children and youngsters in the participating towns and an exhibition from the best works was opened at the end of the conference.
